December 14

Teacher's Message - It has been a pleasure having Miss Peplinski teach our class. We hope her experience here was memorable and 'fun'! All the best to Miss Peplinski and we hope to see her again 'teaching' at Earl Grey.

Please ask your child - Do you have enough food during the day? The reason I'm asking you to have this conversation with your child is because several children are asking for food by the afternoon recess break.  As well, please review with your child that they need to eat their 'lunch' at lunchtime and not go to the 'snack/treat' first.

PLEASE CAREFULLY READ THE SCHEDULE (IN GREEN) BELOW.

MEMORIES WITH MISS PEPLINSKI -

RAZ-KIDS - your child's RazKids level has been increased. I encourage you  to make Raz-Kids a habit over the holidays!

MATHLETICS - We've been working on Mathletics at school so your child should be fairly comfortable with this program. Congratulations to Grade 1 students - they've earned 17 Certificates -  16 in Bronze and 1 Silver.  The Grade 2 have earned 5 Certificates in Bronze. I think we need to get the Grade 2's increase their Certificates! Can you say -  healthy competition!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Learning Commons Book Exchange - ALL (Library) BOOKS MUST BE RETURNED BEFORE WINTER BREAK.

Performing Poetry:

Art For The Concert (walls) - using a few mediums = pencil, marker, paint, pastels

Working Out With Our Buddies (during Gym)

Here's the Link to the Baby Shark song (our buddy class taught us how to work our abs to this song) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XqZsoesa55w

Your child should be able to tell your about these math concepts that were reviewed over the past month or two.

This is a survey (collect data). We used tally marks.

Here is another data collection. What can your child tell you about it. What does the 5/6 tell you? Parents make up a data sheet like this at home. Ask your child to give it a fraction (not that fractions are Grade 1 or 2) but the concept is important to understand.

These are math story problems. Students should be able to read and draw what they understand to solve the friendly math number facts. Have your child make up their own math problem and get a family member to solve it.

Students should be able to give you a math sentence for each Power Of Ten card. Have your child pick a card below and tell you a math sentence (these will include the friendly numbers)

If your child is in Grade 2, they should be quick to tell you the Friendly Number facts. If your child is in Grade 1, they should be fairly confident with this skill. If not practice at home and write them down and post them where you can revisit them everyday.

PLAY THIS DOUBLES VIDEO AT HOME TO PRACTICE YOUR DOUBLES - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=At0quRa90rs

We've been looking at Doubles Plus One as a strategy to solve a math sentence such as 6 +5 =
So 5 + 5 (is a double) plus 1 more, so 10 plus 1 equals 11.  - REVIEW WITH YOUR CHILD . This concept will be explored over the next month.

Look at these math equations. Which strategy would you use? Doubles or Doubles plus one?

2 + 2 =

4 + 5 =

2 + 3 =

5 + 5 =

4 + 4 =

1 + 2 =

5 + 6 =

6 + 6 =

6 + 7 =

HOW DID YOU DO ? PRACTICE AT HOME!

This week we reviewed man-made landmarks that are found around the world such as the Calgary Tower and the Eiffel Tower. Below is a picture of some man-made landmarks around Calgary. landmark is a recognizable natural or artificial feature used for navigation, a feature that stands out from its near environment and is often visible from long distances.
This week we reviewed how the mountains can also be a natural landmark. Inuksuks can also be considered a landmark for those who used them to find their way. Here is book called The Gift Of The Inuksuk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zCi-V6uKsM
