Agenda Message: Read the Blog every weekend.

Teacher Message: Please make sure read Home Reading DAILY and send back every day.

Language Arts: This week we are beginning Home Reading. For the Grade 2's they should be well on their way. Please start at the assigned level that is posted in the Home Reading Data book. Read daily and return every day.
For Grade 1, Home Reading may be new or an intimidating experience. The book they take home should be 'fairly' comfortable and they should show confidence in reading it.
Important habits when reading a book (for the first time):
- do a picture walk (look through the pages - from beginning to end - and talk about pictures and any new vocabulary that your child may not know
- show how to read the title by pointing to each word as you read them aloud (and your child should practice this right after you show them)
- as your child holds the book (NOT ADULT) the child should continue to try to point to each word as they read (show by example when necessary)
- your child should look at the pictures for clues or look at the initial letter of the word
- give your child time (around 5 seconds) to get an unknown word. The unknown word can be given by the parent

This should be a START for reading at home. ALWAYS PRAISE YOUR CHILD FOR DOING THEIR BEST - IT'S HARD WORK

Math: Use the curriculum for Patterns below (choose correct Grade and find patterns around your house). Anytime your child tries additional work at home, they are welcome to bring it into class and post on the whiteboard.

Patterns from the Environment. Here are some pieces of work from Grade 1. They are continuing to work on keeping their patterns in an organized fashion.




Mini-Math Assessment - ask your child how they did when they were asked to print the numbers from 1-20. If they found it difficult, please post these numbers at home and review every day. 
If your child had a reversed number, please have your child practice at home. Some children need additional practice at home and a copy of 1-10 was sent home to post at home and review daily. 


Science:   We've begun our NEW Science Unit - Exploring Liquids. Here is a video that you and your child can watch together. After the video, walk through your house and identify whether the matter is a 'solid' or 'liquid' and remember to recall the definition outlaid - a liquid takes the shape of the container. Students are learning that Scientists need to be safe in the lab and remember rules to make our experiments successful. Such rules are walking, talking and liquids NEVER go in our mouth.

Social Studies: We've begun exploring how Canada began and were introduced to Aboriginals and touched on the subject of Residential Schools. Art: We are learning to sketch what we SEE. We sketched outside this week in the school yard. We sketched things we ENJOY. Doing things you enjoy is a way to stay healthy. Ask your child what they sketched and did they add details to their pictures (that they saw!)

Terry Fox: We've been learning about Terry Fox and his goal to fight cancer. As we talked more, we learned that he had many goals. Some mentioned were:
Terry wanted to...
- never give up
- raise money for cancer research
- dip his leg in the Atlantic Ocean and finally the Pacific Ocean
- try his best to be healthy to run across Canada
- be determined
- run across Canada (one side to the other side)
- fight cancer

- us to continue the Terry Fox Run and raise money

Ask your child what goal they want to achieve. See written goals in the hallway. Ask your child what plan they would make to achieve their goal. 

Gym: We practiced our warm up song for the Terry Fox Run. We are learning routines for our Movin' and Munchin' Social.

Wednesday, Oct. 10 - Heritage Park Field Trip (Volunteers: Mrs. Coulton, Mrs. Massey, Mrs. Zong, Mrs. Ursulescu and Mrs. Dutchak). Please be ready for weather and pack a hearty lunch and water bottle.
For our field trip, we are planning on wearing some 'olden' day clothes. Girls in dresses and boys in a dress shirt. See photos below



for some ideas. Please don't feel that you need to purchase clothes. Please contact me and we'll look at our 'dress-up' clothes at school for your child.

BOOK EXCHANGE EVERY THURSDAY - in your child's agenda write Book Exchange on every Thursday.

Your child needs to return their book before they can borrow another one. 




Agenda Message: NO SCHOOL

Homework: Talk about how each of us are unique. We all have different strengths and challenges. I would like to thank Mr. Massey (Julia's Dad) for wonderfully sharing and reminding all of us that we are all unique. Mr. Massey also shared his daughter's strengths and challenges. It is important to remember we all have our own unique qualities and it's ok that we have similarities and differences.

Language Arts: This week we worked on recognizing where we find upper case letters in our morning message. For example, names of person, places or things. Here is a sample of a morning message. Identify where the UPPER CASE LETTERS don't belong. (P.S. Your child should also be printing their name properly with the initial letter as the only upper case letter).

Social Studies:  We are beginning to review about how Canada began. You can have it read outloud to you.


Art: Wow! Look at the artists!!






Gym: Ask your child how to play 'Chicken Run'. What was important about playing this game? 1)You needed to stay focused 2) Do your part 3)Synergize  4)Be a good sport!! 5) HAVE FUN!
We also learned how to 'stand in someone else's shoes' when we played this game. We brought in our knowledge we learned from Mr. Massey and played the game if we didn't have an arm or had no legs. We wanted to see how challenging it can be and how rules may need to be changed or altered (learning to stand in someone else's shoes can be an eye opener!)













VIVO: On Monday, Oct. 22 to Thursday, Oct. 25 and then later Monday, Dec. 3, we have the opportunity to attend Open Minds School. We will 'stretch' our minds, bodies and experiences during this 5 day field trip. We will explore our topic - IS THIS A HEALTHY HABIT?

We've had some discussion on what food might be healthy and which might not be as healthy? To find out where students are coming from and their frame of mind for healthy food each student individually sorted them into the group they 'thought' where they belong. We will learn more about healthy food this year. Here are some pieces of work. Have the discussion of healthy food at your house. Why do we eat healthy food?
