Friday, Sept 14

Agenda Message: Record your favorite song.

Message From the Teacher: I will not be posting any pictures of students on the blog until I receive the notice that was sent home in your child's agenda last Friday (regarding posting your child).
Please remember NO TOYS at school.

Also - TWO THUMBS UP - we've been SOOOOOOO great at being on time for school with no lates!!!!

Homework: Record your favorite radio song on the card. These songs we will use to have our Body Breaks in class.  Please have your child print the name of the song - either copy from an adults copy or an adult say each letter for each word. Please print your name on the card too. Return it on Monday.

Language Arts: We are working on learning more about our friends through our All About Me bags. We've used the 'I See, I Think, I Wonder' formula to look at the objects. We had some great responses. In our class, I don't choose 'hands-up' but instead I pick out a random stick that has each student's name on each stick. This promotes my philosophy - 'It's okay to not know, but it's not okay to not try".
With this All About Me activity, we are learning to draw 'proper' people (head shape, hair, eye brows, eyes, nose, mouth, neck, body, arms/hands, legs(no sticks) and color in the space (no white spaces) and color appropriate colors). As well, Grade 1/2's need to include and highlight the title of their page. Grade 1 is copying a sentence about their friend. Grade 2 needs to copy the sentence, as well, but they need to add (at least) one more sentence (independently). Grade 1's are encouraged to do so but not expected.
Try 'I See, I Think, I Wonder' with some of these photos taken of items growing in the courtyard.

Math: This week, Grade 1 has worked with Miss Goodine in creating and extending patterns. Grade 2 were given an assessment to see if they have retained their math knowledge from Grade 1. Results can be discussed during our interviews.

Social Studies: This week we've begun exploring our family, our school and our community.

Art: Today we worked on a self-portrait. First we looked at our first day of school picture and drew a bust of ourselves (chest up). We outlined it in black sharpies. Next week - watercolor paint!
Look at our amazing drawings!

Gym: We used Loose Parts in Gym this week. Students were given items and asked to used them NOT for the way they were intended. This promoted creative thinking, problem solving and turn taking within their group. Try it at home - it's fun!
Some of our missions were: catch a bear, sinkhole, tornado, ocean

Indoor Recess: On Monday, we had indoor recess (rain)- many students were not prepared to be outside in the rain. Students had the opportunity to share activities with friends, read or draw in their Free-Time journal.
