Friday, October 5

Agenda Message: Please read the blog.

Homework: Read Home Reading.

Language Arts: This week we have begun 'quiet reading' in class. We are learning to work-up our stamina to read our books quietly. Right now we read for about 7 minutes. Each student has 5 books in their book box that is 'at' their reading level (the one we use for Home Reading). As we lengthen our time to read and learn to 'read' our books independently, I will be taking Guided Reading groups. I will work with small groups of children to strengthen their Reading Strategies. During this time, our class will be inviting Parent Volunteers to read with students and further each child''s' confidence in their reading skills and abilities. Our room parent - Mrs. Coulton will be organizing parents who would like to help out.
Here are some students working on independent reading.

For those parents, who would like additional letter and letter sound experiences with their child, please have your child watch this great YOUTUBE video called Leapfrog Letter Factory - https://www.teachertube.com/video/leapfrog-letter-factory-watch-free-401460

Math: WOW - look how you can organize your work! Fantastic Max!

Here are some patterns we discussed in class and had to identify the core. Review at home. For Grade1's this is a challenging concept. For Grade 2's, they should be confident with identifying the core of the pattern (the smallest part that repeats)

Science: This week we tried an experiment with different liquids. See our data below.

We also learned about VISCOSITY too. Viscosity is how thick or thin a liquid is. When are aware of the viscosity, we can better predict how fast it might run. We tried a 'race' experiment with liquids. Ask your child which liquid ran fast, medium, slow. What was the viscosity - thin or thick?
Here is the video we watched in class - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRqxvCNmYg0 PLEASE ALWAYS WATCH YOUTUBE VIDEOS WITH YOUR CHILD.

Social Studies: We learned more how Canada started. See some of our work below. We explored some 'olden' day books and thought about what we will wear for our day to Heritage Park.
Please visit the website - knowledgekids.ca for a Fantastic Site that is kid friendly and they can discover a lot about Canada.

Here are some of our Visual Journal pages - ask your child about it.

Look at kids excited about Canada!

Art: There is a pumpkin sitting on our 'I See, I Think, I Wonder' mirror on our blue table. Students should be able to tell you what I saw, thought and wondered when they looked at the pumpkin.

We painted a picture of a pumpkin.

Can your child tell you what steps we followed to draw our pumpkin?

Gym: We were busy getting ready for our Moovin' and Munchin'. We also cut up our healthy veggies too.
On Wednesday, we met our Grade 3/4 Buddies for the first time too. We played a warm up (card-game) and were leaders for the Thunder Song (Thunder - Imagine Dragons). . See if your child can teach you at home. Here we are with our buddies.

PERFORMANCE (ON MONDAY). We were entertained and informed by 'Kananaskiis in the Classroom' regarding the Water Cycle and how we our water is important (and how we need to stop polluting the water). Here are a few pics.

Schedule:

Monday, Oct. 8 - NO SCHOOL

Wednesday, Oct. 10 - Heritage Park Field Trip (Volunteers: Mrs. Coulton, Mrs. Massey, Mrs. Zong, Mrs. Ursulescu and Mrs. Dutchak). Please be ready for weather and pack a hearty lunch and water bottle.
For our field trip, we are planning on wearing some 'olden' day clothes. Girls in dresses and boys in a dress shirt. See photos below

for some ideas. Please don't feel that you need to purchase clothes. Please contact me and we'll look at our 'dress-up' clothes at school for your child.

Monday Oct 22 - Thursday, Oct. 25 (and Dec. 5) - Vivo - https://www.vivo.ca (website). We will visit this site to explore our question - Is this a healthy habit? See Vivo video - vivo generation h on YouTube (ALWAYS WATCH VIDEO WITH YOUR CHILD).

WOW !!!! What a great turn-out for Movin' and Munchin'. Thanks to Mrs. Ursulescu for the cucumbers. Thank you to all the parents/grandparents for attending and having fun.
