January 11

Teacher Message: We've missed several Agenda messages this week (ooops). Today only the Grade 2 students wrote in their T.W.A.S.. Have a chat about their 'Rock Brain' moment. Grade 1 parents, please take the time to review the info below about Rock Brain and Flexible Thinkers. Ask your child when they might have had a Rock Brain moment. What strategy could they try to not let the Rock Brain take over?

Super Flex and Rock Brain - Social Thinking
This week we had the Occupational Therapist in to talk to our class about being a flexible thinker and trying not to have a rock brain.
Talk about these concepts (and use the language) at home. Here is the information that was shared. Please review with your child.

Poetry - We have begun working on poems - reading and creating new poems together. By the end of our poetry focus, students should show proficiency in identifiying a poem (when compared with a story), read a poem with proper fluency, voice level and expression. As well, students should present confidence in writing their own poem.
We worked with Mrs. Helsen's class to work together to write a poem with a partner. Check out our work in the hallway  (posted next week).

Here are two poems -

DOG
By Callum and Ainsley

Gentle dog, licks my face
Gentle dog, whimpers at me
Fierce dog, showing his sharp teeth at me
Fierce dog, charging at me

DOG
By Julia and Noah

Gentle dog, licks my hand – it loves me
Gentle dog, whines to me to go for a walk
Fierce dog, fighting other dogs and biting
Fierce dog, charging me because it is extremely mad

Grade 1 Math  - Equal or Not Equal ?

Grade 1 Math Test on TUESDAY (on Equal and Not Equal)

Ask your child to read these poems (Grade 1's will need support to read it.) Ask your child what picture they had in their head when the teacher first read the poem.  See if you can find poetry in books at home. Maybe listen to some (child friendly) song lyrics. When you listen to a poem or song, what picture do you get in your head?

We worked together to brainstorm words from our Holiday! We thought of moments we enjoyed and holiday times that were frustrating. Here are the poems that came from those words.
