February 1

Teacher's Message: Just a few things. What a great week skating! A HUGE thank you to our volunteers.
As well, I have several students per day who do not have enough snacks to get them through the day. Please ask your child if they run out (and have to ask the teacher). Decide on some additional snacks together.

Mental Health: Before reading this story together, discuss these questions:
What does it mean to have a rock brain? What does it mean to be a flexible thinker?
What things in life can you control (my reactions, my thoughts, my words, my body)? What things might be out of your control (see chart below)? Why is it important to be a flexible thinker? How will being a flexible thinker help you and people around you? Read this story together and then revisit the questions - https://vimeo.com/213243135

Bell Let's Talk - We reviewed that sometimes our physical body hurts and we go to the medical doctor to help us. There are times when our brain/heart are sad/anxious/worried/unhappy etc and we can go to a doctor that we can talk to to help our mental health. Here is video to review with your child. We reviewed it in class. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jf13seh1_2Y

Skating: What a great experience! Kids learning to skate for the first time and other's improving on their skills.  Skating with your classmates is great experience too. (Hope the videos all work!)

Reciting Our Dog Poems - Grade 1's are expected to have a clear voice with appropriate volume
Grade 2's are expected to have a clear voice, with appropriate volume with an understandable pace and expression.

Gymnastics - Ask your child about some safety rules expected for Gymnastics. When you are climbing over a trellis, what is expected?  When you jump off a balance beam, what is expected?
When you use the equipment, how many are expected on the equipment at a time? When the teacher says 'criss cross...' and you are on a piece of equipment what is expected?

Story Structure- We will be learning how stories have a beginning, middle and an end. Here is a video for review https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKAYXhIWcvE.
We will be creating our own story with a B.M.E. We hope to share it at Parent-Teacher Interviews in March.
Here is a video for your child to sing to remember the parts of a story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_nePjWXecQ

Here is a story to talk about BME - A Bad Case Of Stripes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_Mn-3x83eU

Here is another great story with a clear BME - Pinkalicious https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhxblXNc3dc

We are also looking at writing a BME story with a moral. Here is a story with a moral. Listen to the story together. What is the moral (true meaning and lesson being taught) of the story?  Our morals will connect to what we know what it means to be healthy.

Writing: Grade 2 is expected to become familiar with seeing comma's in their reading and using it in their writing.
Here are some recent Grade 2 poems with a focus on verbs and commas.
These poems were inspired by this poetry book -
