November 16

Teacher Message
Homework: Please have your child read their T.W.A.S to you. At this point, Grade 1 has been copying (from the Smartboard) the T.W.A.S. that was created by the class. It is ALWAYS encouraged that Grade 1 also add additional words, as well. Grade 2 is able to copy but MUST add several more details on their own.  It is optional to have your child write about their weekend. I ask students if they would like to read their T.W.A.S. aloud to the class on Monday. All T.W.A.S books should be returned EVERY MONDAY - please remind your child to take it out of their backpack (or slide into their agenda to help remind them).
PLEASE make sure that your child's AGENDA comes to school everyday.

PLEASE  REPLY - Are there families (students) who will be away on Dec. 18/19 for the Christmas Concert. Mrs. Sorenson would like to know as she is preparing the concert parts.

Language Arts: We are beginning a Chapter Book - Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingles Wilder. Ask your child about it.

Will we learn something new about settling a new land?

Science - Magnets Experiment - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9s8CbP7ExY

Water Challenge (at home!) Great job students. I hope this challenge promoted water conservation and better brushing skills (at least longer !)
(I am still missing 6 students data sheets - trying to do a follow up activity at school)  - if you have misplaced the sheet, see the notice below.

Science - We've begun our work on Magnets. Miss Peplinski is working hard to inform and excite the students about the world of magnets.
Here is a fun video to watch - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFvoRexxA2Y  PLEASE REMEMBER TO WATCH YOUTUBE VIDEOS WITH YOUR CHILD.
Here is some magnet vocabulary that we will be reviewing over the coming weeks:

Math: This week we have reviewed 'friendly numbers'. Ask your child what they know about the friendly numbers. How can knowing the friendly numbers help you solve these math facts (sentences)?

3 + 7 =

2 + 8 =

7 + 3 =

8 + 2 =

6 + 4 =

4 + 6 =

Central Memorial Park - ask your child about the soldier on the horse. (It was a memorial for those who fought in South African War). Ask them what sort of details did they include on their Visual Journal page.
As well, we saw the Cenotaph (below) and the Eternal Flame (no picture). What information can they share about those?
One of our goals was to be aware of the 2D shapes that make up the cenotaph (rectangles). We are creating a piece of artwork that will be sent to the Korea Veterans Association of Canada. See the link.

The Central Memorial Park and the Cenotaph is a Landmark in Calgary. See if your child recognizes these Landmarks?

We are starting 'poetry'. Here is our poem. We have circled the High Frequency Words and will be working with a group to read it aloud and act out the poem.

Reader's Theatre: A group of kids have been learning to read the story - Mortimer. They have learned several skills with this story:
1. It is important to practice
2. It is important to know your part (and be ready to read).
3. It is important to work well with the group and be open to other's ideas.
4. It is important to make your performance interesting (whether it's acting or verbal expression).

AWESOME JOB! I can't wait to see more Reader's Theatre.

Remembrance Day Assembly Wreaths

Grade 1 - working with words

Gym - Ant Tag! Ask your child how to play. How did Synergizing help your play the game. (Kids had to work together to free the dead ant.)
We've also played 'Boomerang' Ask your child how to play.

Cool designs!
