November 23

Teacher's Message: PLEASE REVIEW THIS NEW RULE WITH YOUR CHILD. FROM NOW ON, STUDENTS WILL NOT SIT ON THE CAMPING CHAIR UNLESS THEIR NAME HAS BEEN CHOSEN. There has been too many issues and students to 'arguing over' the chair and get on it while the appointed (or not yet appointed) student is not on it.

We still have quite a few students every week forget to return their Book Exchange book. Please ensure that your child returns their Library book (Book Exchange book)  every Thursday (or before Thursday). It would be helpful if a parent can write in the Agenda book (in the colored parent comment section) that it is Book Exchange Day.

Thank you to our volunteers for the Zoo Field Trip - Mrs. Ursulescu, Mrs. Kidd, Mrs. Coulton, Mrs. Massey and Mrs. Embry.  IF THERE IS ONE MORE VOLUNTEER FOR THE FULL-DAY FIELD TRIP TO THE ZOO ON THURSDAY, NOV. 29,  IT WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

As well, below you will see the information on the Christmas concert. If you do not see your child's name for a speaking part then your child was 'certain' that they did not want to have a speaking part.

Reminder that NO TOYS should be coming to school. I know beyblades have been coming to school and kids have been pretty good at just using them outside at recess. There should be NO toys in the classroom.

Reminder to Grade 2 parents - please return the Flouride Survey by Tuesday, Nov. 27.

Math: Grade 1 and Grade 2 will be focussing on Number Concepts. Both grades will be working on the Friendly Numbers (and get them memorized) by reviewing the Power Of Ten cards, subtilizing (seeing groups quickly) and playing card games. Along with friendly numbers, Grade 1 will also focus on these goals:

GRADE 1

GRADE 2

Remember friendly numbers are -

Subtilizing can look like (seeing different groups quickly) -

Try these videos for subtilizing - (kids love it!)

Here's a fun, country-style subtilizing:

Can your child tell you how they use the Friendly Number strategy to solve these problems?

Science - Magnets
We have been exploring the magic of magnets over the past two weeks. The Grade 1s and 2s have been learning that magnets can attract and repel and have a magnetic field. Try asking them about the associated actions and see what they show you. We tested the iron content in our breakfast cereal and learned that using a very strong magnet we can make shreddies, cornflakes, and Julia's cereal move across a bowl of water! All of the students also got to feel two very strong magnets repel and try to fight the magnetic force. Most exciting of all, we have been talking about the fact that all magnets have a North and a South pole, just like Earth. Next week we will begin to investigate if our home planet and magnets have anything else in common...

Reading Our Chapter Book With Miss Piplinski - Ask your child what they remember from Chapter 1. What did they draw to remember - the characters? the setting? the time this story took place? how the family got food?
