November 9

Teacher Message: How is Home Reading going? Are there any concerns? Is your child reading their leveled book fairly confidently? They should be able to read most words. Are you using the Reading Strategies that are listed in the middle of the Data Recording book? Make sure to remind your child the strategies that they are doing well. You can work on a Strategy that they often don't use.

As well, I hope you are practicing the High Frequency Words that should be in your child's Home Reading Bag. Please email me if you don't have these words.

IMPORTANT REMINDER - Our walking Field Trip to the Central Memorial Park has been rescheduled to Wednesday, November 14. Dress for the weather. We will leave the school at 12:45 and return by 2:30.  A reminder letter will go home on Monday.

On Thursday, Nov. 29, we are going on a full day field trip to the Zoo. Unfortunately (again) that is Fun Lunch. If you want to cancel your order you can do that a week before the 29th. If you want to keep the order, then we will save it (like last time) and your child will get it at the end of the day when we return from the Zoo. Last time, the kids appreciated getting their lunch!

There was no T.W.A.S. this weekend.

HOMEWORK: Complete the 'How Much Water Do We Waste' - The Water Challenge. Perform the experiment with your child - supporting them with the 'math' through the experiment. The goal is to promote water conservation.

Remembrance Day - We watched this YouTube Commercial- Watch together with your chid.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7ESRBMk36E

Ask your child about what they - SAW, THOUGHT and WONDERED about the Remembrance Day Service on Friday.

Here is the story we looked at to see how animals were helpful during the war - The story is called 'Bunny The Brave War Horse - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlqlYXOWY_Q

Here is a Remembrance Day poem from Sarah:
Poppies are red
I have a few
I love you
I hope you remember me too

You fought in the war
I hope I remember
There’s poppies on you
So I know it’s you

Math - Subitizing Song  - YouTube Video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsScVF6Jo6A
HAVE YOUR CHILD PRACTICE THIS SEVERAL TIMES PER WEEK. Seeing groups quickly is important. For Grade 1, seeing groups quickly up to 10 is expected.

We will be looking at the many ways we can solve problems. We will be thoroughly reviewing the "Make Ten' Strategy over the next several weeks. Here is a video to explain: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9h4skGoWJ8

So far we have reviewed that knowing the 'friendly numbers' are a quick way to solve problems.
Can your child solve these problems quickly? Can they identify which Power Of Ten card that 'matches' the math sentence?

6 + 4 =
2 + 8 =

Representing A Number

Science - we are finishing up our Unit on Liquids. We tried some experiments this week. Ask your child how to change a liquid (water) to a solid  ice). How can you change a liquid (water) to gas  steam). We did this experiment in the Staff Room. Here is a video (REMEMBER PLEASE WATCH YOUTUBE VIDEOS WITH YOUR CHILD) about the different States of Matter: https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=tuE1LePDZ4Y

We also watched this video on how to conserve water. Talk at home on how you can help the earth and conserve water.

We have reviewed what the Water Cycle Looks like - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5gFI3pMvoI

CORE MUSCLES - The Physio Therapist, Ms. Lynn visited our class to remind us that we use our CORE Muscles everyday, so we need to keep them 'in shape'.
Core muscles are your abdomen, your hips area, your back and the T area across your upper back. Try some of the moves at home: the egg, the table, the bacon, the toast. We will be working on them more in school too.
